Liviu Poenaru, THE MENTAL FORECAST

LIVIU POENARU, PhD

Liviu Poenaru is a psychotherapist based in Geneva and holds a doctorate in Psychopathology and Clinical Psychology (University of Lyon). His work integrates clinical practice with a critical analysis of how societal and economic systems shape mental health. Specialized in Computational Social Science at the University of California, he bridges psychology, computational social science, neuroscience, epidemiology, philosophy, and the social sciences to explore the interplay between individual psychology and external pressures, offering insight into modern psychological dynamics.

Poenaru is the founder of the scientific journal In Analysis (Elsevier), which fosters interdisciplinary dialogue on psychoanalytic theory, social science, philosophy, and the socio-economic dimensions of psychological issues. The journal encourages cross-disciplinary exploration in order to deepen the understanding of complex psychological, social, and institutional phenomena.

He is also the author of Inconscient économique (Economic Unconscious, L’Harmattan, Paris, 2023), a book in which he explores the influence of economic codes operating below conscious awareness on mental health. This central theme in his work examines how unconscious processes are shaped, organized, and intensified by economic forces. Drawing on critical thinking, epidemiology, neuroscience, computational social science, and the social sciences, he investigates the impact of digital capitalism on psychological phenomena such as addiction, alienation, anxiety, exhaustion, and the broader psychiatric burden.

His specialization in Computational Social Science at the University of California allows him to explore how simulation, algorithmic modeling, and network analysis can offer new methods for understanding the transmission of unconscious economic codes. This interdisciplinary field provides tools to connect large-scale social dynamics with clinical insights, making visible the hidden structures that shape mental suffering in the digital age. His work aims to operationalize these connections by developing frameworks to study how social environments driven by economic logic contribute to emotional distress and psychological disorders.

Poenaru is also critical of the commodification of knowledge and of the growing influence of market-driven logics on academia and scientific research. He advocates for ethical approaches that respect human complexity and challenges systems that prioritize productivity, visibility, and profit over psychological life, social bonds, and collective health. His work opens a space for rethinking how societal structures might better serve individuals and communities.
